this with anyone that cares about quality of education in Miami!
We need
all educators and support to rally around the rejection of the current
salary negotiations. Too Little, Too
Late!
We've shown that our salaries from
the early 90's have shrunk by $7000.
This is in
the neighborhood of Dr. Crew's recommended starting salary of $40k ( http://news.dadeschools.net/releases/rls06/244_supttargets.htm)
Say
NO to the inadequate proposition that is on the table today by attending our
Roadside Rally at US1 and 17th Ave THIS SATURDAY, 10 AM
- Wear Red for ANGER at ABUSE<
Let's draw the community's attention to the travesty being shrouded in Looooooong and difficult to follow board meetings.
Let's warn them of the volunteer WORK STOPPAGE that we are calling for after Octover 11 if the board doesn't commit to give us what we need October 11!
This
negotiation affects all school employees - the longer they argue over a proposal
that is to be rejected anyway, the less money in the pot for all - and some on
the board are threatening to outsource support work. My response to that
is "By suggesting outsourcing, she admits that our current board is inept
at managing their responsibility. The fact that she would outsource it to a
For-profit company is admission that it can be done. If a for-profit
organization could do it, then why can't a NON-PROFIT? Poor
management?"
How can
Broward and Monroe manage to take care of their support staff and raise all of
their salaries suffering from the same (or worse in Monroe's case) DCD
loss? Monroe managed their resources and took their responsibility serious
- they foresaw the DCD cut and RAISED the mmillage to compensate so that they
could give their teachers a starting salary of $40k
If our
School Board's excuse that there's no money in the downtown office is
valid, then why did the Nuevo Herald write this July 9 - "El Nuevo Herald
has analyzed statistics that show that during the two years in which Rudy Crew
has been superintendent, the number of administrators with salaries over
$100,000 per year has increased by 40% with a cost to the district of
$7.5 million per year."

Since
you and I cannot double-dip, I'd like to know if Frederica
Wilson (who is a legislative friend, she is working for our
state cost of living raise) is getting paid from the state as well as her $100k+
MDCPS salary (her senate salary from the state should be $162k this year http://www.senate.gov/artandhistory/history/common/briefing/senate_salaries.htm ).
I also
want to know why our alternative ed program costs our district $1000 more per
head than the regular schools. This amounts to $18 million taken out of the
"pie," the available funds for our salaries. Until these schools/programs
are held to the same financial accountability and limits of the regular schools,
this amounts to an unfair tax on JUST teachers and support staff shoulders while
the School Board votes down the millage rate. If Alternative Ed costs this
much more, let it be shared by the community at large.
I also
want to know why Miami Dade is the only major urban area in Florida NOT
receiving Lab School funding from the state? We are losing the potential
of millions of dollars of state funding and relief from overcrowding of our
regular schools by either not affiliating the two Lab programs with FIU (Lab
West or PAC - Partnership in Academic Communities) or not establishing a new Lab
School (why doesn't the pre-eminent county in Florida have a state recognized
Lab program?).
I
believe there must be hundreds of millions of dollars like this hidden or
misspent each year. Our construction aspect of the budget was so rife with
mismanagement a few years ago that the state had to set up an oversight board to
make sure money was spent correctly. WHY DO WE THINK the rest of the
system is run any better?
We should call in MGT (of Tallahassee) or some other consulting firm trained to find money and make corrections to save that money, like MGT saved Memphis City Schools $114 million. Similar savings in MDCPS would amount to $800 million, more than enough to bring us all to where we need to be to live in Miami-Dade.
Furthermore, state statutes allow our district to borrow this year for the projected savings to deliver to you the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) you've been denied.
Don't just sit there! GET MAD, GET OUT, AND GET PAID!
